    Manager, Public Information

    The Manager, Public Information enables communication between Philadelphia Gas Works to both news media outlets and the general public when directed.  the incumbent assists the department director with any statements released to the press and the public and ensures that they follow company guidelines are accurate, and conform to corporate policies and standards; and include planned corporate communications themes, when applicable.


    Corporate Communications & External Affairs


    Communicate critical information effectively to the public.


    Acts as media spokesperson to the media and responds to inquiries from the news media during and out of working hours.


    Acts as first contact during incidents, crises and other unexpected occurrences.


    Must work together at all levels and with media representatives to disseminate information and instructions to the public if emergencies occur.


    Writes and edits press releases for distribution to media outlets.


    Draft speeches and talking points; arrange interviews for PGW Executive Officers and other Management team members as directed.


    Assists with arranging logistics for press conferences, meetings or speaking engagements for senior team members and editorial board meetings.


    Respond to requests for information from media outlets.


    Be the face of a PGW when appropriate.


    Handles work independently, proactively, and works well under pressure, when necessary.


    Help maintain and uphold a certain image and identity for the company.


    Serves as editor for owned, paid, shared and earned communications materials including but not limited to news releases, feature stories, creative pieces, reports, speeches, web and intranet properties, social channels, program announcements, fact sheets, scripts, and the annual report; will also write aforementioned materials as needed.


    Personnel Management


    Supervises subordinate quality of work and work activities by determining priorities of activities, making work assignments, monitors projects, and providing direction and assistance as required. Ensures subordinates and contract staff, when applicable, are properly trained and adhere to company policies, practices and procedures including collective bargaining agreement.


    Finance & Accounting


    Assists Director in activities related to the financial management of the department including but not limited to budget development, monitoring and reporting, maintenance of petty cash funds, preparation of capital work authorizations, requisitions, limited purchase orders, signature payments and facilitating timely procurement and appropriate RFP processes.


    Other Related Functions


    Attends various meetings where media may be present including but not limited to PGW public events, City

    Council Hearings, Gas Commission Meetings and etc. as requested.


    Coordinate with the Incident Command Post staff during emergency incidents, establish a Media Information Center for briefing the news media, and establish a rumor control function to respond to public and media inquiries.


    Performs other special projects and assignments as requested.




    Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or related field of study required.


    5 to 7 years of directly related experience working in communications, marketing, event planning, customer service, information management, and public speaking preferably within a highly sensitive political or public relations environment.


    1 to 2 years’ experience in a supervisory or team leader role.


    Must  have  knowledge  of  general  office  practices  including  but  not  limited  to  office  administration,  budget/accounting  principles, procurement procedures, strategic planning, team building and personnel management.


    Must have supervisory skills with the ability to create a professional and constructive environment that fosters a team-oriented and customer service approach to day-to-day operations.


    Must have verbal and written communication skills with the ability to build long-term constructive and cooperative working relationships with co-workers, vendors, management and outside agencies.


    Must be a well-organized, planning manager with the ability to execute a project from concept to production in an environment where daily priorities may shift.


    Must be familiar with all news media channels of communications; have detailed knowledge of major company operations; extensive experience in dealing with many kinds of people and organizations; and well-developed creative, analytical and writing skills.


    Knowledge and command of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.


    Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, desktop publishing programs, digital and commercial communications equipment, and Web-based programs.


    Must be flexible with the ability to work smoothly under pressure producing high quality results on short notice and maintaining a high level of composure and self-control during crises under media scrutiny and responding to issues that may arise outside of normal business hours.


    Residency Requirement :  All employees of the Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW) must live in the City of Philadelphia for the duration of their employment. If a candidate does not live in the City of Philadelphia at the time of hire, he/she must move into the city within twelve (12) months of his/her hire date.
